Simply Dartmoor Camping
'crock of gold'
Is situated here at Tor Royal, Princetown in the heart of Dartmoor Devon amongst the 365(sq mls) 934(km2) of unspoilt wildnerness. Comprising of rolling hills topped with magnificent Tors, overlooking heather and bracken carpeted moorlands, sloping down towards deep wooded valleys interspersed by rivers and brooks.
Dartmoor is steeped in history and it's wilderness ensures many prehistoric and age old features remain undisturbed.
Just a stone's throw from the camping field, Royal Tor's 'New Take' contains numerous burial sites and stones circles including the 'crock of gold' tomb.
Flint tools from the Mesolithic Age around 8000 BC have been discovered in the Dartmoor National Park including here on Tor Royal.
Sites such as Merrivale's 'stone row', and the 'childs tomb' cross along with many others are what makes this area of Devon such a delight.
Tor Royal itself has an impressive history.
Tor Royal Farm and Cottage were built by Sir Thomas Tyrwhitt with land given to him by the Prince Regent around 1785 before commissioning the notorious Dartmoor prison in the village of Princetown less than a mile from the field.
